What is Howlers Ridge
Howlers Ridge is grounded in evidence-informed research that demonstrates how time in nature improves health, lifts mood, reduces stress, and builds connection. When construction of the retreat center is complete we will offer intentionally-designed programs that incorporate leading methodologies in nature-based healing, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, somatic therapy, and other healing practices to foster resilience, personal growth, and recovery for those navigating trauma, grief, and life’s hardest moments, including:
Veterans
People in recovery from substance use disorders
Survivors of trauma, sexual assault or domestic violence
Individuals grappling with loss, grief or other challenges
Nonprofit practitioners who are experiencing burnout or the effects of vicarious trauma
We envision a world where people have the time, space, and resources to access transformative wilderness experiences and restorative nature-based retreats that promote healing and empower them to return to themselves and to healthy, connected lives.
Our Founder’s Story: Taylor Kitsch
Actor. Advocate. Outdoor Enthusiast.
In 2024, inspired by a family member’s addiction recovery journey, his respect for the veteran community, and his personal experiences in nature, Taylor founded Howlers Ridge to offer people a space to breathe, reflect, and heal.
In his role as Glen Kryger, in the Netflix series Painkiller, Taylor portrayed the devastating impacts of the opioid crisis. He has been deeply impacted by addiction in his own family and he intimately knows the toll it can take on people and their loved ones. Taylor has supported a family member’s recovery and is incredibly inspired by their sobriety and wants to create a place that can offer others healing and support in their recoveries.
Taylor has also powerfully portrayed military members in numerous roles and in 2024 he was honored to receive the American Veterans Center’s American Valor Lt. Michael P. Murphy Award and the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award for Excellence in Entertainment for his portrayal of Lt. Michael P. Murphy in the award-winning film Lone Survivor. Through his work Taylor has built lasting relationships with military members and veterans which have given him a new perspective on what it means to serve and the lasting impacts of that service on the individual and their whole family. Off screen he is passionate about supporting active duty military, veterans, and fallen heroes and every Memorial Day, he completes “The Murph Challenge”. He hopes that Howlers Ridge will be another way he can give back to those who have sacrificed so much.
Taylor was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada and grew up loving the outdoors. Now he lives in Montana where he spends time fly-fishing, riding his motorcycle, and taking pictures of wildlife, especially wolves.
“Nature has always been my reset. I believe that creating a change in your environment can create the change you want in yourself. Now I feel lucky to be in a position to offer that chance to others—the chance to pause and slow things down so they can reconnect and focus on their own healing.”
